McQueen en el Met de Nueva York

Hoy abre sus puertas en el Met de Nueva York la exposición dedicada al fallecido diseñador Alexander McQueen, titulada Savage Beauty (Belleza salvaje). Por desgracia no podré ir a verla, pero promete ser una fantástica retrospectiva de sus creaciones, desde 1992 hasta su último desfile en febrero de 2010.

Las más de 100 piezas y 70 accesorios van acompañados de citas y explicaciones del mismo diseñador, conocido por su extravagantes creaciones y la teatralidad de sus desfiles. Lo que más me gusta de sus diseños es su inpiración en la moda de finales del siglo XIX y su estilo oscuro/gótico, pero a la vez caprichoso y enigmático. A veces sus vestidos nos recuerdan más bien al vestuario de una película de época (o de terror, según la temporada).

Famosos son sus altísimos zapatos alienígenas de 2010, que lleva sin complejos Lady Gaga (desde entonces alta gracias a los más de 25 cm que añaden).

Otoño/Invierno 2006-07

“[This] collection is. . .  romantic but melancholic and austere at the same time. It was gentle but you could still feel the bite of cold, the nip of the ice on the end of your nose. . . With bustles and nipped waists, I was interested in the idea that there are no constraints on the silhouette. I wanted to exaggerate a woman’s form, almost along the lines of a classical statue.”

“Working in the atelier [at Givenchy] was fundamental to my career. . . Because I was a tailor, I didn’t totally understand softness, or lightness. I learned lightness at Givenchy. I was a tailor at Savile Row. At Givenchy I learned to soften. For me, it was an education. As a designer I could have left it behind. But working at Givenchy helped me learn my craft.”
